A DEFINITION !

To FOSSICK : means to rummage or search about ; a dialect word current in Australian gold mining, as in search in crevices , abandoned workings or new prospects. All this allied to a natural inclination to seek and search, to pry and to probe. Ref: Cons.Oxf.Dic. - 4th Edition 1958 (my copy). I have done some searching in abandoned workings - crevices were not my scene - though I have spent many happy hours in the company of the late W.F.(Bill) West and his associates, being enthralled by his description of the ideas and theories in the development of his Termite Prospecting Program (a modern adaptation of the activities of water finders of pre-Biblical times) and if that doesn't fit the definition of searching in crevices, I don't know what will, though the actual crevice searching was somewhat delegated and involuntary. Involuntary in the sense that termites have only two objectives – to find hard (carbonated) water, and to find food, preferably cellulose, procured from surface material of dry grass and wood, which comprised the major part of their diet, coupled with the water as an aid to digestion. Their area of operations was from the surface, but avoiding sunlight, then underground following the water table. One appreciates that termites can only exist in areas of suitable climatic and geological conditions, which unfortunately restrict their production of evidence of what lies below. As the water table rose and fell, the termites had to progress down to the water or retreat upwards in advance of the water. Their routes between the rock surfaces were subject to constant blockages from rock fragments, and termite mounds above surface witness the amount of detritus they had to remove, these mounds being their equivalent of mine waste dumps. Somewhere in the past someone associated termite mounds with the presence of underground water, and eventually recognised that the mounds might reveal, through a simple panning of the detritus, what minerals may lie below. My targets now are different. I equate the "Aussie" term of to FOSSICK to seeking, searching and prospecting, but my operations will be in the digital world, no longer in the bush. I aim to switch to AFFILIATE MARKETING, in a range between e-niche and e-normous, aided by some little skill in blogging, some twelve years experience of gold mining in Central Africa, including prospecting, and the more mundane Exploratory Reconnaissance Costing Reports. THE FUTURE FOR TRAFFIC EXCHANGES ?

Amongst Traffic Exchanges there is an oft quoted statistic that only 2 to 3 percent of all who endeavour to make a living from traffic exchanges enjoy a profitable return from their endeavours - thus indicating that some 97 to 98 percent consistently lose money. One assumes that that would not have been their intention? so what happened?
The reasons are as legion as the surfers themselves; I have no access to the statistics from which to base an opinion - other than my own not very successful efforts to-date. I do know that once having picked up the bug of surfing - it's very hard to stop; even in the knowledge that to continue in the same fashion must inevitably bring the same results - there are so many conflicting advices around - which one to take? which leads to glory and which to penury? Suck it and see? - the old lollipop test? ah! but that can be so expensive?
I do know one thing; the best of all the alternative solutions which I have seen, and am currently pursuing, has such persuasive logic, and a step by step, carefully watch the budget approach, that only someone who has been through the mill could present. I'll add more to this in the weeks ahead; I am truly convinced, like Dale Carnegie and Zig Zigler, the best marketing result is achieved between willing buyer and willing seller, both knowing what they are getting and/or receiving, and neither expecting a free hand out. TIMES, THEY ARE A-CHANGING?

 No, not fossicking in this one, though the link at the end may provide access to other news?

In June, 1960, I joined Gold Fields of South Africa, Limited and was seconded as Secretarial and Accounts Assistant to the holding company, Consolidated Goldfields of South Africa Limited, in their Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia, office. This was a company founded by C J Rhodes, which strange to relate bore little influence in the gold mining world at that time, compared to its South African subsidiary. In fact it was often claimed that the South African subsidiary on occasion directed London Head Office business.

           Such was the power of South African gold – so much so that the Rhodesian staff was totally motivated in their efforts to discover a gold prospect with ore reserves sufficiently large enough to justify a claim to be the largest ever Rhodesian producer.  Many and various were the prospects examined, but nothing of any consequence materialized during my employment – not even alluvial prospecting on river systems flowing out of the eastern border. There had been earlier hopes that the Matapa Mine, on the Lonely Mine Road, north out of Bulawayo would become the company’s flag-ship, but ten years operation ended in failure.

           Part of my duties was to relieve the Bulawayo Area Mine Secretary when he took leave, to carry out temporary duties on both the Dawn Gold Mine, also on the Lonely Mine Road, and the Marvel Mine at Filabusi; both of these operations, whilst successful, fell short of flagship status.  On one of my Bulawayo spells the Chief Geologist, the late Dr. Max Mehliss  showed me the archived copy of the splendid prospectus issued by the Board of Directors to would-be shareholders – with an expert opinion by the Chief Geologist – the same Dr. Mehliss – that the mine would not be viable, due to arsenic complications in the ore-body. Nevertheless the flotation went ahead, only to fail after ten years operation, and the company ( Matapa Gold Mining Co.) went into voluntary liquidation – not a happy ending.

          On a subsequent Bulawayo trip, having to spend a week-end in Bulawayo – I eagerly accepted an offer from Dr. Mehliss to accompany him on a visit to a gold prospect to the east (and a bit southerly) of Bulawayo. It was after lunch when we set off, and we went on and on. By the time I had opened three gates I was fully acquainted with why I had been given the invitation – but I was completely fascinated

with the country and by Dr. Max’ wry comments  - on and on we went – only stopping at a store for a cool drink – and on and on again, until we reached the destination – the Renco Mine – just before nightfall, and not so keen on the return trip in the dark?    We met the prospector/smallworker/fossicker, whose name is on the tip of my tongue (Vermaas? Vermaak?); long chats and descriptions of the complex ore body – at least as much as was then known – and a belated but very welcome casserole supper and to bed – an army type stretcher, and a blanket on the verandah and I was asleep in seconds.  Awakened at daylight by the largest German Shepherd dog that I have ever seen licking my face… and eventually, by mid-morning, with gate opening (and closing!) skills at the ready  - a long slow return to Bulawayo. Cons Gold Fields eventually purchased the claims, subsequently selling on to R D Kennedy of Marvel Mine, Filabusi.

Recipes from restaurants are not as hard to fill as you may think. With a little planning you can make it at home.        Having said that it doesn't mean that it's going to be hard. It is more a trial and error method. Once you get the taste right it still could not be as good as dining out? What has a lot to do with it is the time we allow. I would have to say that it's not usually that the meals are under cooked, but overcooked. And the two items mostly overcooked are meats and pasta. The meats get dried out and the pasta becomes too soft. If you cook the meat on the grill you need to marinate the meat at least a half an hour before cooking, turn the heat lower, flip it at regular intervals and baste it at least half way through the cooking time. This increases cooking time but keeps the moisture in. For pasta, stir often and turn off the heat a minute before the set time. Let sit for the minute, drain and rinse with hot water.

      .....and there is absolutely no reason why this has to be a solo effort - fine if that's how to see it - but conjuring up a marvelous meal from scratch with a member of your family is great fun.
